When HR confronts these people, the HR Officer gets bullied and HR (as either a rank or file employee) is then kept out of the ‘executive’ loop. The ‘cowboys’ are resistant to any behavioural change, and gang up in solidarity. Even when presented with legal implications and costs, arrogance wins and employees leave. This is the state of HR and management in SMEs. I always ask about staff turnover and absenteeism rates; the reply is ‘natural attrition’. But we know that employees leave mostly because of bullying and micromanagement.

Isn’t executive behaviour and performance part of a non-executive directors remit (NED)?

1. The issues are about behaviour not performance. Therefore the HR tools and support need to address and resolve behaviour rather then performance.
2. How it is critical to always ensure ‘reasonable management action is always taken in a reasonable way”
