The upside is that we have reached a point in social development where we have time and resources to be concerned about these issues rather than dedicating effort to merely surviving.

While not all organisations and individuals are concerned with fairness and social justice there are plenty that are. Beyond pursuiing social justice for its own sake, there are considerations of the impact of perceived fairness on employee engagement and performance, the potential benefits of diversity, and social licence to operate. This is a very legitimate area for AHRI to explore

So essential that as HR professionals we challenge our own bias and are aware of/understand our own privilege. I think we (of all roles in the business) should be at the forefront of this work and lead the way. Really appreciate you writing about this.

And how are we defining ‘working class’ – particularly generationally? I agree with some of the commentary here, labelling individuals doesn’t help. Having a fair and equal talent acquisition and management processes are the only mechanism that should be considered here – not how educated/well connected/wealthy someone’s parents are.

I am included in these statistics. My parents and I emigrated to NZ and then to Australia for a better life. I was taught that if you worked hard you would receive opportunities that were not available in my country of birth. This is a belief shared by many migrants. I would fall into your defined “generational low privilege”. Why make a victim out of people who want a better life, want more and seek it by coming to Australia. Why demean peoples aspirations by making them a victim. I, like many migrants, didn’t want nor need my employer to recognise my lower socioeconomic background, just my hard work, skill and drive to succeed. Victimhood isn’t synonymous with success.

Tim, the best has nothing to do with race, gender, or any other label. The best are the best because they work for it.
