Do you have any suggested strategies on dealing with senior management that still joke about mental health and self care? I for one 100% agree that changes comes from the top down – if we as managers change our language to switch the culture around to being more proactive, consultative and supportive, it would hopefully achieve the goal of nurturing our employees which in turn leads to a more effective organisation. I have unfortunately had the challenge in the past where an executive plays it down.

Having provided support in this area for twenty years or more, I have found that people respond with confidence when someone, particularly someone in a leadership role, takes an authentic interest in them and their situation. In my recent writing for AHRI, I explained a number of areas that are useful in sustaining attention and action. These are: responsibility, attention, motivation, purpose, autonomy and resilience. If these are present, then you as a leader, are doing your job. You are on your way – and so is leading and managing effectively for action.
