HRM TV: Bridging the cultural gap

When conducting business, having emotional intelligence is important – it helps you ‘read’ people. But emotional intelligence relies on cultural context. So how can HR professionals and leaders bridge the gap from one culture to another?

As more Australian businesses look to break into overseas markets, having a knowledge and appreciation of different cultures can provide a competitive advantage. Dr Tom Verghese, director of Cultural Synergies, speaks with us about what individuals can do to become more culturally aware and communicate more effectively.

Dr Tom Verghese will be speaking about developing culturally intelligent leaders at AHRI’s National Convention on 26 August. Registration is now open. Click here for more information.

I’ve seen The Book Thief in stores and never knew what it was about sonuds very interesting! I recently read the first in a trilogy called Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson. It’s fantasy but very well written with an emphasis on character and a sense of community within the world that’s been created. Add in a cool magic system involving metals and you’ve got a pretty interesting story that’s part heist, part revolution. I’m a big fantasy fan, so it may not be for everyone, but I recommend it. I’m on the second book in the series now.
